Communities

Starting in 2010, 50 communities from across the country are now funded to implement healthy eating and active living initiatives that can support healthier communities for children and families. Efforts by each leading site focus on reaching children who are at greatest risk of obesity because of their families' income, race or ethnicity.

Use the Issue Area drop down menu to sort HKHC initiatives via their project focus.  For example if you want to find all of the HKHC initiatives working with farmers markets or Safe Routes To School, select the issue area and the map will be populated with only the communities working on that specific issue.  We will add on-the-ground examples as their initiative progress.

Starting in 2010, 50 communities from across the country are now funded to implement healthy eating and active living initiatives that can support healthier communities for children and families. In December 2008 four-year grants were awarded to the first nine leading sites to help support initiatives already under way in their communities. Efforts by each leading site focus on reaching children who are at greatest risk of obesity because of their families' income, race or ethnicity. As of December 2009, 41 more communities join their efforts to reverse childhood obesity through community based solutions.

The first Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities grantee meeting for the HKHC leading sites was held April 1st through 3rd in Chapel Hill, NC. More information and presentations from the meeting can be found here.
